An Alchemy of Dragons

Illustrations and other art related to my on-going fantasy web-novel, An Alchemy of Dragons. See, also Writing & Books.

For the story, which is set in a vaguely medieval-ish world, I pull inspiration from Celtic and Anglo-Saxon decoration and calligraphy, medieval illuminated manuscripts, and 15th and 16th century books of magic. Many of the border designs and fantasy alphabet letters are based on historical examples.

The line and wash images are painted with pastels and water and finished with black or walnut ink on paper. Wet pastel gives a dreamy finish that is more matte and powdery than watercolor and more light and luminous than gouache. It rather reminds me of frescoes done in tempera on plaster.
